Infineon’s New ADSL Gateways Meet European Green Standards

Design teams in USA, Germany, Austria, Singapore and Bangalore worked together for Infineon’s highly integrated new chips. imranThey combine on a single die line driver, AFE, DSL DSP, voice processing, integrated dual Gigabit MACs, Voice codecs and also DECT cordless phone functionality.

The chips are the latest in the AR family, which Infineon has taken over from TI. The ARX188 with a dual core processor is designed to keep up with networks running at up to 150 megabits without degrading either voice or IPTV. The ARX182 is designed for a low cost gateway built around VOIP.

The 188 is sampling now; the 182 is expected mid-year. Imran Hajimusa writes he has just been on a marathon tour of device manufacturers and is confident of major design wins. Word comes that Deutsche Telekom is expanding DSL networks, good news for Infineon, their main supplier. While DSL chip sales are down, they are doing much better than chip sales in general

The “European Code of Conduct” requires significant energy reduction and is influencing chip design worldwide.  Infineon believes the new chips meet those goals for 2011 and beyond. Everyone has been making announcements of how “green” they are, although it’s hard for me to evaluate the claims without a test lab. Alcatel, driven by Ben Verwaayen’s personal commitment, intends to be a leader.
