P2p is still important, but Leipzig-based ipoque confirms it is consistently dropping as a % of traffic around the world. Ipoque's DPI reference customers are mostly universities, mostly in Germany and Eastern Europe but also in South Africa and South America. As a percent of traffic, p2p is down 20% in Germany in the last two years and perhaps 15% in other parts of Europe. This confirms what we've reported from AT&T, Japan, and Britain.
Some other results: Ares, not Bittorrent, is the most popular p2p protocol in their South American customers; Much of the German traffic is now Rapidshare and megaupload rather than p2p. Skype dominates VOIP. Music sharing via p2p is dramatically down. The ipoque customer survey is a good read.
