Is Telstra Paying To Eliminate Competitors?

Telstra apparently just bought the spectrum of former competitor iBurst, which they have no use for. Suzanne Tindal at ZDnet emphasizes this is "speculation." If true, "It would be switching off the competitor because the spectrum band is effective for wireless broadband and not for 3G," Warren Chaisatien of Telsyte suggests. I haven't read the Australian law, but I'm sure the transfer could be blocked by Stephen Conroy either directly or on competition grounds. Conroy much prefers competition to regulation and surely realizes that "competition only works with competitors." Telstra is currently insulting him with a non-compliant proposal for the NBN.

Essentially, Telstra game is to get as close to a monopoly as possible, and claim the related income.
